The famous Ten Commandments are not just rules for “right” behaviour. They express the two primary commands: to love God and our neighbour. They are the visible expression of a new bond (i.e. covenant) between the one-real-compassionate God and those who have been set free from slavery. The prelude to the Ten Commands is “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the house of slavery ….” therefore….live as those who have a similar compassion.
Thus the very nature of YAHWEH, the covenant maker is now to be lived out in the lives of the recipients. The New Testament echoes this. As Jesus the Christ has opened the way to freedom from a self obsessed bondage, then our response is to be as grateful recipients of this gift. So now live a life style which embodies the nature of the giver i.e. as ones who display the love of God in Christ.
